Parish Catechetical Leaders “are catechists first” and they “should continue their personal, spiritual, and professional development and participate in diocesan programs of inservice training and formation, catechetical institutes, conventions, retreats, and accredited programs”.

During the first year of formation, Parish Catechetical Leaders who wish to receive a certificate as a Director of Religious Education in the Diocese of Brownsville are to complete the Effective DRE Skills Series (10 courses):
- Understanding Catechesis
- Developing a Parish Program
- Keeping Records and Budgets
- Recruiting and Training Volunteer Catechists
- Communicating Effectively
- Catechizing for a Just World
- Building Community
- Maintaining Professional Balance
- Forming Ministerial Relationships
- Spirituality of the Catechetical Leader

– Francis, Apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium "On the Proclamation of the Gospel," 2013 Nov 24.
