The Vocation Question: Answered in the Heart

Fr. Ignacio Tapia
Director of Vocations

At the Last Supper Jesus said to his Apostles, “It was not you who chose me, it was I who chose you to go forth and bear fruit.  Your fruit must endure, so that all you ask the Father in my name he will give you”
(John 15.16)

I love being a priest. I thank God for helping me to listen to the call to priesthood, for putting in my life wonderful people through whom it was easier to discern my vocation and for giving me the understanding and strength to answer "Yes." It is incredibly gratifying to live a life of deep meaning. I thank God for that gift, which continues to deepen and grow.

If you have ever felt an interest in knowing more about priestly and/or religious life (even if the interest seems to be minor) I encourage you to reflect and pray, asking God to open your heart to His call; you may be receiving a genuine call. It is not a coincidence that you are now reading material on this topic. It is a real mystery how God calls his people; therefore, this office is meant to walk you through the basic information and discernment on how a person becomes a priest or religious person. I hope and pray that you also allow God to speak to your heart. The possibilities can be immense and the rewards out of this world. It will be a pleasure for us in the diocese of Brownsville if you consider us as an option.

As Vocation Director, I invite you to contact me, so that we can talk further about God’s call for you.

May the Lord Jesus truly be the Lord of all that we do and are.  Asking God’s blessing for you and the intercession of Our Lady the Mother of God.

Please contact me .  I look forward to hearing from you!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each of you has a special mission in life, and you are each called to be a disciple of Christ. Many of you will serve God in the vocation of Christian married life; some of you will serve him as dedicated single persons; some as priests and religious. But all of you must be the light of the world. To those of you who think that Christ may be inviting you to follow him in the priesthood or the consecrated life I make this personal appeal: I ask you to open your hearts generously to him; do not delay your response. The Lord will help you to know his will; he will help you to follow your vocation courageously.
