San Juan Nursing Home

San Juan Nursing Home Inc. (SJNH) operates under the guidance of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville and is organized for religious and charitable purposes. Our mission is to minister in the name of Jesus Christ with dignity and compassion to the elderly, sick and frail, to those recuperating from illness and injury. Committed to “Service with Love”, we strive for excellence in nursing care and offer a holistic approach to the well being of our residents and their loved ones.

SJNH was founded by Fr. Jose M. Aspiazu, OMI in 1965, and opened its doors to the public in 1966. Since then, thousands of families from both local and surrounding communities have been served. Our goal is to meet our resident’s needs in an individual, comprehensive and timely manner, to a quality standard that seeks to improve their overall health and social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. We firmly believe that aging persons and persons with disabilities should be able to live in security and dignity.

Our core standards are rooted in Scripture and are evolving in response to the challenges of today.

1. Dignity of the Human Person - We recognize the sanctity of human life. People do not lose dignity because of disability, poverty, age, lack of success, or race.
2. Community and the Common Good - The human person is both sacred and social. We realize our dignity and rights in relationship with others and in our communities.
3. Rights and Responsibilities - People have a fundamental right to life, food, shelter, health care, education and employment. All people have a right to participate in decisions that affect their lives.
4. Option for the Poor - The moral test of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable members. We are called to look at public policy decisions in terms of how they affect the most vulnerable.
5. Dignity of Work - People have a right to decent and productive work, fair wages, private property and economic initiative.
6. Solidarity - Our responsibility to each other cross national, racial, economic and ideological differences. We are called to work globally for justice.
7. Care for God’s Creation - The Catholic tradition insists that we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God's creation.

Facing the realities of chronic illness and/or limitations in the activities of daily living can be a difficult and overwhelming process.

Long term care is made up of many different services which may include help with activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, eating, using the bathroom, etc.)

Considering long term care:
Making the decision to place a family member in a facility is never easy. A decision like this is one the family should make together with the help of others such as doctors, therapists, and religious/spiritual leaders. Please note that it is essential for your loved one to be as much a part of the decision making process as possible.

Signs that your loved one needs help:
Other than a serious injury/illness requiring 24hr. nursing care -
• Not paying bills on time or not at all
• Not recognizing the need for household repairs/maintenance
• Increase in driving violations, getting lost
• Not preparing meals, missing meals
• Forgetting to take medications, mistaking medications or dosage
• Not making sound decisions

At SJNH we understand how essential a nurturing environment is to helping each individual retain their maximum level of independence. Our staff is committed to understanding your loved one’s needs, no matter how great or small. With your support and following the physician’s recommendations, we will provide a comprehensive plan of care that meets the needs of your loved one.

We believe that aging persons and persons with disabilities should be able to live in security & dignity.
