Supervisor: Director of Social Services

Job Summary:  Provides counseling within the context of a Catholic environment.  Counsels with individuals and families who are experiencing emotional, psychological, moral, personal, and marital problems.  Reviews Tribunal files and provides counseling to couples who want to re-marry in the Catholic Church and have had their prior marriages annulled.  Conducts outreach effort to all parishes in assigned counties to explain the counseling program.  Conducts classes in the communities in topics such as bereavement, ministry to the poor, and others as assigned.  Develops and revises forms to document counseling provided.  Develops other forms as appropriate in the overall management of the counseling position.  Makes referrals to health and social service agencies in the community.  Consistent attendance at the worksite is required.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in counseling
  • License in counseling
  • Two years paid experience in counseling or related area
  • Knowledge and basic skills in counseling
  • Ability to work with people
  • Ability to speak effectively in public
  • Must be able to speak English and Spanish
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development
  • An understanding of Catholic moral and ethical teaching

Job Elements: 

  • Provides individual, couple, and family counseling.
  • Responsible for keeping and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with counseling related and other community agencies as appropriate.
  • Works with the Diocesan Tribunal. 
  • Has reliable transportation.
  • Develops topics and conducts adult education style classes to support ministry in the diocese. 
  • Holds group counseling sessions off-site (parishes, community centers, etc.)
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Salary:  Salary to commensurate with experience.

Working conditions: Full-time employment of 40 hours per week.  Position may require frequent evening and weekend hours.  Travel within the Diocese will be necessary occasionally with mileage reimbursement available.
